4EU+ launches a new project on micro-credentials

The 4EU+ Alliance is pleased to announce that it has been granted funding to launch the 4EU+ Micro-Credential Integration (4EU+ MICI) project as part of the European Commission's Erasmus+ call for proposals on European policy experimentation.

The 4EU+ MICI project is a step toward addressing Europe’s digital and green transitions through a cutting-edge micro-credential framework. This initiative is aligned with the EU’s strategic goals of enhancing employability, fostering educational innovation, and supporting sustainable economic transitions.

“4EU+ MICI is a great opportunity for the Alliance. It is the first project obtained jointly with all eight 4EU+ member universities, allowing us to collaborate more closely with our associated partners in defining the skills needed for the labour market of the future while addressing both the green and digital transitions,” states Sabine Bottin-Rousseau, project coordinator at Sorbonne University.

About the project

The 4EU+ MICI project will develop a standardised and flexible system to design, issue, and recognise micro-credentials focused on digital and green skills. It aims to:

  • Provide flexible, accessible pathways for upskilling and reskilling, especially in response to labour market needs

  • Foster entrepreneurship, mobility, and employability across Europe

  • Demonstrate the potential of a unified micro-credential system to enhance lifelong learning opportunities

By engaging industry leaders to ensure relevance and maintaining effective communication with stakeholders, 4EU+ MICI will drive widespread adoption and set a benchmark for European education. The project aims to increase awareness and adoption of micro-credentials in the short term, enhance employability through high-quality, targeted credentials in the medium term, and drive transformation in European education over the long term by supporting the integration of micro-credentials into national and regional systems.

Why micro-credentials?

As the EU advances its Digital Strategy and Green Deal and is about to launch the Union of Skills, micro-credentials offer a flexible, innovative solution for workforce adaptability and lifelong learning. They align with the European Council’s standards for cross-border movability, standardisation, and transparency, making them invaluable for responding to economic and societal transformations.

Building on its successful experience, the 4EU+ Alliance is well-equipped and ready to lead this initiative. Previous 4EU+ achievements include co-developing interdisciplinary courses, launching MOOCs and piloting innovative educational models that have reached thousands of students and academics. The 4EU+ MICI project also aligns with the activities carried out in the 4EU+ main Erasmus+ project 1CORE, where the Professional Learning Academy and the 4EU+ position on micro-credentials have been developed. The initiative represents the Alliance’s commitment to shaping the future of education in Europe by integrating micro-credentials into higher education and lifelong learning frameworks:

“The creation of micro-credentials will enable 4EU+ to jointly develop courses available to lifelong learners as well as students. In line with the new 4EU+ Strategy 2025-2035, this will further enhance our educational offer. 4EU+MICI will also allow us to propose a common framework for the recognition of micro-credentials across Europe,” highlights Elena Del Giorgio, 4EU+ Interim Secretary General.
