UNREAD Winter School and Conference at the University of Warsaw

The five-day UNREAD Winter School and Conference was held from 23 to 27 February 2026 at the University of Warsaw. Students and academics from 4EU+ member universities — Charles University, Heidelberg University, University of Milan, Sorbonne University, and the University of Warsaw — actively contributed to the success of the event.


During the workshop led by Prof. Martin Ouředníček, Ph.D., and co-led by Adél Stettler (Charles University) and Ph.D. Karolina Wojciechowska (University of Warsaw), participants explored transformations of the urban environment. The sessions focused on the analysis of visual documents, taking into account territory, place, scale, networks, and movement.


The workshop “Spatial Planning,” hosted by Ph.D. Karolina Wojciechowska (University of Warsaw), Prof. Martin Ouředníček (Charles University), and Prof. Piotr Okniński (University of Warsaw), concentrated on case studies and a moot court exercise.


The programme also included a stationary urban field trip led by Prof. Dorota Mantey(University of Warsaw) entitled “Manifestations of Political Memory, Local Identity and Dialogue in Space in the Context of Urban Change – Examples from Warsaw.” The visit included a museum lesson at the Museum of Warsaw's Praga District.


At the conference, participants were welcomed by Prof. Anna Zbiegień-Turzańska, Vice-Dean for Engagement and Enterprise of the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Warsaw. The opening lecture, “Urban Inheritages – A Few Paradoxes,” was delivered by Prof. Anna Geppert from Sorbonne University, Department of Geography and Spatial Planning.


The meeting featured a range of sessions, group presentations, and discussions. Topics included smart transportation systems and green infrastructure; social control and exclusion; contemporary memory politics of World War II; migration and integration dynamics; urban outskirts transformation; and smart cities and urban memory.


The course coordinator was Ph.D. Karolina Wojciechowska (University of Warsaw).

The Winter School was organised within the framework of the 4EU+ ETERNITY project.
