Advancing urban health: Flagship 1 Strategy Workshop in Heidelberg

On 13 and 14 February, the Programme Committee of Flagship 1: Urban Health and Demographic Change of the 4EU+ Alliance convened in Heidelberg for the Flagship 1 Strategy Workshop 2025.

Delegates from Charles University, Heidelberg University, the University of Milan, Sorbonne University, the University of Copenhagen, the University of Geneva, and the University of Warsaw met at the Heidelberg Center for American Studies to discuss strategic developments, educational initiatives, and future research collaborations within the Alliance. The event was organized by Prof. Ulrike Gerhard and Dr. Editha Marquardt from the Institute of Geography at Heidelberg University.

The two-day workshop focused on the ongoing 4EU+ strategy and its relevance for Flagship 1, covering topics such as urban health, urban geography, and interdisciplinary learning pathways. Dr. Anne Sommer, Head of 4EU+ Local Office Heidelberg, provided valuable input on the strategy, contributing her expertise and insights to the discussion. Participants also explored opportunities for joint research projects, with particular attention to initiatives surrounding migration and health, urban coexistence, and disabilities. The collaborative atmosphere fostered dynamic exchanges aimed at shaping the future direction of the Alliance.

A visit to Heidelberg’s historic Old University provided a pleasant opportunity for informal networking, further strengthening the bonds between partners. The workshop concluded with milestones for 2025, reinforcing the commitment to increased collaboration in education and research across Europe.
