As of 1 July 2023, the 4EU+ Alliance is joined by the Paris-Panthéon-Assas University, making it the 8th higher education institution on board of the Alliance building One Comprehensive Research-Intensive University.
The integration of Paris-Panthéon-Assas University into the 4EU+ Alliance was unanimously approved by the 4EU+ Governing Board. “I am delighted to welcome Paris-Panthéon-Assas University into the 4EU+ family. The University will be an important asset to the 4EU+ Alliance and will help us drive the Alliance forward in accomplishing our ambition to create an even stronger alliance of European research-intensive universities”, highlighted Prof. Henrik Wegener, Rector of the University of Copenhagen and incumbent Chair of the Governing Board.
Considered as the direct successor of the Faculty of Law of Paris, which was founded already in the 12th century, Paris-Panthéon-Assas University boasts rich history and academic heritage in teaching and research. It offers study programmes in Law, Political Science, Economics, Management, Information and Communication Sciences to over 23,000 students, taught by 1,500 academic staff. With strategic inter-university agreements, transnational joint study programmes, a large international student community, and overseas campuses in Singapore, Mauritius and Dubai, the University has established itself as a leader in internationalisation.
4EU+ Secretary General Isabelle Kratz pointed to the new, important element that the integration of Paris-Panthéon-Assas University brings to the comprehensiveness of the Alliance: “We are pleased to see the 4EU+ Alliance growing with the arrival of the Paris-Panthéon-Assas University. The university's excellence in many fields, particularly law, will complement the profile of other 4EU+ members. Collaborations between our institutions already exist, and we look forward to developing them further through joint programmes, increased student and staff mobility, common research projects, and much more."
Prof. Emmanuelle Chevreau, Vice-President for International Affairs of Paris-Panthéon-Assas University, explains the motivation for joining 4EU+: “We had existing links with most of the members of the Alliance, especially through Erasmus+, and a long-standing partnership with Sorbonne University, particularly through double degrees. Moreover, 4EU+ was one of the first European Alliances to be founded just after President Macron's Sorbonne speech, and it is characterised by the excellence of scientific research, innovative teaching methods, and multidisciplinary approach.”
The 4EU+ Alliance’s emphasis on multidisciplinarity was also one of the factors that encouraged the membership request from Paris-Panthéon-Assas University: “Paris-Panthéon-Assas University is a social science university with a strong focus on law, but it is looking to invest more in multidisciplinary research on topical issues such as sustainable development and artificial intelligence, as well as in the European degree. Our entry into 4EU+ is a valuable asset that will enable us to boost our research and teaching in this direction. We would like to express our gratitude to each of the members of the Alliance for their trust, and in particular to Sorbonne Université, which has supported and guided us throughout the application process,” concludes Stéphane Braconnier, President of Paris-Panthéon-Assas University.

4EU+ is one of the European University alliances selected for funding in 2019 in the first Erasmus+ “European Universities” pilot call and further supported by the EU following the renewal funding call of 2021 with the 1CORE project. The Alliance’s also received funding in the framework of Horizon 2020 with the Science with and for Society project TRAIN4EU+.
4EU+ Alliance seeks to strengthen the European vision of deepened exchange and mutual enrichment by developing a new quality of cooperation in higher education, leading to the creation of a truly integrated European University System and contributing to the building up of the European Education and Research Areas by 2025 and beyond.
