Project description

This project explores the analytical concept of (gift) exchange and its potential for integrating Transcultural Studies and Transcultural History. During her Visiting Professorship at Heidelberg University, Professor Veronika Čapská will work on her monograph, “(Re)configurations of Gift Exchange in Early Modern (East) Central Europe.” The project focuses on how gift exchange practices shaped societal relationships and fostered connections across diverse cultures. A key activity is organising an international conference to foster advanced interdisciplinary dialogue among historians and cultural anthropologists.

Period abroad: June - August 2025

Veronika Čapská’s vision for the project

"I see the 4EU+ Visiting Professorship as a unique opportunity to forge new interdisciplinary collaborations in research and teaching at Heidelberg University, the world's leading centre of excellence in Transcultural Studies. I am looking forward to new research impulses in Transcultural History, to collaborating with my host, Professor Thomas Maissen, and to serving as a mediator who paves the way for others, especially early-career scholars."
