Applications of deep-learning in life sciences (DeepLife)

First 4EU+ Deep Learning in Life Science Hackathon in Heidelberg

"Deep learning applications in life sciences": under this motto, more than 50 students from five European universities participated in the first DeepLife Hackathon at BioQuant in Heidelberg from 14 to 16 June.

The on-site hackathon was the final event of the DeepLife course, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Carl Herrmann (IPMB & BioQuant) as part of the SEED4EU+ initative. Fourteen online lectures by 11 lecturers from Charles University, University of Milan, University of Warsaw, Sorbonne Univeristy and Heidelberg University on the topics of genomic data analysis, protein bioinformatics and image analysis were held from February to June 2024.

The students then worked on application projects and finally exchanged ideas and developed joint approaches during the two-day hackathon. The meeting included a keynote speech by Prof. Dr. Rebecca Wade. Thanks to their hard work, lots of coffee, good food and a great atmosphere, the groups were able to present impressive results during the final poster session.
